Murlet overview

Murlet is a free network video recorder for Apple silicon Macs. Add your cameras' RTSP URLs and it records around the clock, using the GPU and Neural Engine to understand what it sees without sending anything to the cloud.

Features
  • Works with any RTSP-compatible IP camera, including inexpensive models.
  • On-device AI tags people, cars, and animals so you can find relevant footage quickly.
  • All processing and storage is local; footage never leaves your Mac.
  • Light on resources: records nine cameras using less than one CPU core on an M1 MacBook Pro.
  • No account and no internet connection required; recording continues through outages.
  • Size-capped storage: you choose how much disk space to use, and the oldest footage is deleted first.
  • Standard formats: Matroska (.mkv) video playable in VLC, metadata in SQLite, so your footage is never locked in.
  • Free: everything it does today stays free, and no existing feature will ever move behind a paywall.

What's new in version 2026.9.1

Fixed
  • Fixed some cameras, such as the Eufy Indoor Cam S350, getting stuck in the connecting state.
  • Fixed stuttering live view on cameras that deliver video unevenly: live view now buffers briefly to smooth playback. The current delay is shown as "Buffer delay" in camera settings.
  • Fixed crash from slow memory leak when running for multiple weeks.
New
  • Changed recording to be fully event-based, reducing SSD wear and storage usage. Footage is buffered in memory and only saved around events. Previously Murlet always wrote 10-minute recordings and later pruned those with no events.
  • Added ONVIF camera discovery: Murlet now automatically finds cameras on your network, so you only need to enter a username and password. Cameras that don't support ONVIF can still be added by URL.
  • Added guided setup on first launch, covering where to store video and adding your first cameras.
